Beggining of Crucible on John Proctors Changes free essay sample

We have all been accused of things that we didn’t do. Maybe it was something big, like cheating on a test, or stealing something. Maybe is was something small, like eating the last cookie or leaving the light on when you leave the house. John proctor’s wife, Elizabeth Proctor, was accused of the ultimate crime; witchcraft. John underwent many changes during this play. At first, he was trying to hide the relationship that he had with Abigale. As the play progressed, he began to lay everything on the line to save his wife and her unborn child. I’ll go more in depth on his changes as my essay progresses but he went through multiple personality changes while at the same time, his outlook on the world around him changed just as often. Let’s start with his personality at the beginning of the play. John was a hard working man that earned everything that he owned. We will write a custom essay sample on Beggining of Crucible on John Proctors Changes or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He was a respected member of society. John is a good man, but he has a secret, fatal flaw. His love for Abigail Williams. This led to their affair (which occurs before the play begins). The affair created Abigail’s jealousy of Elizabeth. After Abigail is discovered in the woods with friends â€Å"summoning spirits†, her and her friends go on the defensive and start accusing others of witchcraft by saying that they can see people with the devil (189). Proctor, scared to be accused also, turns another cheek. As the play goes on, the girls begin to accuse more and more people of witchcraft. The girls accuse Goody Sibber, Martha Bellows, Alice Barrow, Goody Hawkins, Goody Bibber, Goody Booth, and many more people, including an innocent old man who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, like a lot of other people that were accused. When John hears of this, he begins to get angry at the girls; mainly Abigail. Abigail is staring to realize how much power she has at this point of the play. She can take down anyone she wants with one quick accusation. She decides to use this power to take down Elizabeth Proctor. After accusing Elizabeth of being a witch, Abigail goes to John and tells him that she wants to be with him. John is infuriated and this causes another change in personality. John begins to threaten Abigail. He says that he will tell everyone about their affair, despite his public appearance, which is the reason he has not told everyone yet. Abigail refuses to take back the accusation and it begins to become axiomatic that she is going to take down Elizabeth no matter what John does. This brings out a whole new side of John. He begins to plot to take down Abigail and all of the girls. Abigail tries to say that Elizabeth stabbed her with a sewing needle that she planted on Elizabeth in a doll that she made.

10 Argumentative Essay Topics on Managing Conflict

10 Argumentative Essay Topics on Managing Conflict If you are tasked with writing about conflicts and management, you need to include some useful information. That is why you will find 10 facts that might be of use to you in your next writing task: There are many forms of management. Inside of each is a different way to handle conflicts in the workplace. In some cases, management styles borrow from one style. They then adapt another to suit the needs their organization has. This is done so that conflicts are mitigated and resolved. When companies seek to manage conflict among employees/employers it is important to follow human resource policies. This requires the appropriately trained and designated human resource representative. They must be in charge of all conflict management processes within the workplace. In conflict management, there are various outcomes possible, including that of win-lose, lose-lose, or win-win. It is the goal of good conflict management to discuss all options. It is the goal to encourage compromise between the affected parties in order to ensure a win-win outcome. The majority of office place policies for managing conflict revolve around mediation. This is where the affected parties are able to find a safe space. They are able to discuss their respective sides, in search of finding common ground. This revolves around positive communication. Communication is often the cause of the problem related to office conflict. This means that employees will make statements which are misinterpreted or not clearly stated to other employees. This leads to poor communication on top of poor communication. In many professional cases, simply having a space where misconceptions can be discussed and acknowledgements for mistakes made resolves the issues. It is natural for people to seek acknowledgement that a boss. For example, was unclear in directions and that is what led to a project not being followed as the boss wanted rather than the boss telling the employee they made a mistake when they in fact did not. In the modern workplace, men still earn an average of 30% more than women. This is due to two things. The first is that women take more days off for personal reasons. The second is that men negotiate more aggressively during salary negotiations. Men also prove more aggressive during promotional negotiations. This raises conflicts among groups where diversity exists. Men directing women in the workplace with a command are not respective of the sexism or misogyny in their tones or word choices. Women, as a result, are forced to either tolerate the impropriety or stand up for themselves. When women stand up for themselves in the workplace it is perceived that they are â€Å"emotional†. Other choice explicative words are used to describe headstrong women in this situation as well. This creates conflict between team members. This also creates conflict between leaders. This conflict requires conflict management. This is administered by human resources. If no human resources departme nt exists companies must find leaders among their staff. Executives- for example- can be tasked with mediating conflict. With the rise of online communication, cyberbullying in the workplace is more prevalent than ever. More than three million jobs were posted on the most highly ranked freelance website in the world last year. This figure has only risen with time. All signs suggest it will continue to do so. That being said, those who hire freelancers often use the lack of face-to-face communication for bullying. This bullying comes in many forms. Some people are rude online because they have no HR representatives to hold them accountable. Others are rude or unprofessional. They do this because they believe that paying someone for a simple job gives them control over that person. Others know they will not be held accountable for their lack of action. Some know they will not be held accountable for their actions. In such cases people may use aggressive demands, threats, or cursing when communicating. This conflict does not always get settled. If there are no proper channels or HR representatives to help mediate, resolutions may be non-existent. Such behavior leads to high rates of turnover among freelance individuals and those clients hiring them. Another issue involved in freelance workplace conflicts is that of gender. Men and women alike behave and communicate differently to men versus women. Women and man alike will avoid excuses and be respectful, professional, and kind toward those bosses or clients they believe are men. When it is known that the freelancer or client is a women, other women will provide excuses and be lackadaisical in their work. Men, on the other hand, will be more condescending. This form of cyber bullying causes conflicts too. Diversity is something for which companies strive. This same diversity leads to many workplace conflicts. People who come from different backgrounds have different cultural principles and behaviors. In the modern workplace, a man from an Eastern European or Middle Eastern culture may think it perfectly acceptable to treat women differently. They may have been raised to treat women as a second class. This creates severe workplace conflict among gender diverse teams. Those same men will talk down to women. They will overlook them when it comes to promotional opportunities. They will give them more administrative and menial tasks in a group project. All of this stems from differences in culture. The problem arises when more than one culture is forced to work together. In such situations, the prevailing belief that women are beneath men ruptures between the team members. This creates a conflict which falls upon the shoulders of management to resolve. Workplace conflicts exist when individuals do not feel that their voices are heard. If a boss provides unclear parameters for a project the employee has only that to use. They might complete the project to the best of their abilities. The boss might then include new parameters and demand changes. The individual may seek simple acknowledgement from the boss that the boss was responsible for not providing explicit instructions. In such cases the boss often ignores this, fails to administer acknowledgement or an apology, and the conflict erupts. Not apologizing or accepting responsibility for actions causes a great deal of workplace conflict. This can be resolved by guilty parties simply acting in mature/professional fashions and apologizing. Having HR can be a big help here. The case report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

The case report - Essay Example It is an intentional and goal oriented programme. Change can also be unplanned. This is when an organisation is forced by circumstances to change some or all of its processes, strategies, systems or any aspect of its operations in order to remain in operation or perform better. In this case change is reactive. Apart from whether change is planned or unplanned, there are also different perspectives on the nature of change process. The planned approach assumes that the change process is linear and carefully crafted with several identifiable steps, which follow, in a sequential order. Another perspective, however believes that this linear, orderly fashion does not suit the complex and rapidly changing environment in which businesses operate. There is the issue of the locus of emphasis in initiating and implementing change programmes. Three schools of though have also emerged in this regard. There is the Individual Perspective School which believes that the locus of change should be the individual. The Group Dynamics School believes that organisational change should best be achieved through groups and that behaviour of individuals should be changed by influencing group norms, roles, and values. Then the Open System School sees organisations as consisting of several systems and also being parts of the larger system. Thus the internal subsystems interact among themselves while the organisation as a whole interact with the external environment. Changes in any parts of the system affect the other subsystems and also the general performance. TERMS OF REFERENCE: Report how to manage change for a case company Type of assessment - Individual Draft a job description advertising for a change agent suitable for this case organisation. From the points raised by the General Manager, Steve Humphries, it would be good to look at the following areas, which will form a yardstick on which basis decision as to whether or not change is necessary can be taken, what type of change, when and how. Let us look at the strengths of Polyflow Plastics & Packaging Limited: [1] Good contract from established customers [2] Sub-contracts from fellow competitors in the industry [3] Contacts all over London and South East [4] Customer satisfaction due to personal attention by the MD [5] Experienced workers [6] Big market in the packaging products line From the above, it can be noticed that presently there are good contracts both from organisations [established customers] as well as from competitors. From all indications, this has boosted the earnings of the organization and makes

Market Structures Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 2

Market Structures - Essay Example Monopolistic competition along with oligopoly constitutes the structure of imperfect competition. Firms that are imperfectly competitive offer many products. The products are offered at administered prices. The price changes are costly and slower. The prime prediction of the theory of monopolistic competition is that firms will produce at the level where marginal cost equals marginal revenue in the short run. However in the long run, the firms will operate at zero profit levels and the demand curve will be tangential to the average total cost curve. The figure shows the marginal cost curve for the monopolist (MCsm) for the short run. MCsm is the summation of the short run supply curves (SRSc) in the competitive market. The loss of producers’ surplus (area B) and consumers’ surplus (area B) arises from the profit maximizing decision of the monopolist. A monopolistically competitive firm can operate above the level of normal profit. The above figure represents the economic loss for a monopolistically competitive firm. For a monopolistically competitive firm economic profits are zero and at equilibrium average total cost equals price. Both the firms in monopolistic competition and perfect competition are able to zero profits in the long run. It is possible for a firm operating in the monopoly market to acquire economic profits in the long run. The price is greater than the minimum point of Average total cost curve in the long run but in perfect competition price equals minimum of average total cost. In perfect competition price is lower and output is higher than monopolistic competition. A form of market where the industry is dominated by small number of sellers is called oligopoly. Each oligopolist is aware of the market conditions as few sellers are present in the market. The decision of one firm can influence or are influenced by other firms. The responses of the participants of the market are taken into account in

Fascism vs Communism Essay Example for Free

Fascism vs Communism Essay All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state. † Benito Mussolini I am writing about a host of differences between Italian Fascism and Soviet Communism. Yes, they both are totalitarian regimes, one under Lenin, then Stalin, who, in my opinion takes the cake for worst ever when it comes to the world’s extensive list of dictators, and Mussolini’s Fascist Regime, who ruled from 1922-1945, the last three years serving as a somewhat puppet ruler in northern Italy for Adolph Hitler, before his unfortunate and brutal death at the hands of partisans. Both nations were militarized, both were dictated, both were ruthless and oppressive to political and foreign enemies, and both were aligned to Nazi Germany at one point. But let’s be real, this is where any sort of comparison comes to a screeching halt. The March on Rome took place on Oct. 22 and last until the 29th of October, 1922. In a time of uncertainty, it was a daring and bold move, and thanks to no intervention by the military on King Emmanuel III’s orders, was a successful one. That week, around 30,000 â€Å"black shirts† assembled and helped bring about the establishment of a new regime, the National Fascist Party. On Oct. 28th, with the King’s blessings, â€Å"Il Duce† assumed all powers as a functioning Prime Minister, and Fascism became a welcome way of living to most Italians. Mussolini would be recognized as his regime slowly but surely took power as a hero to many across Europe at the time and a savior in a sense to his people. As for the Soviets, their rise to power came about as they were being thoroughly and clearly defeated by the Germans on the eastern front in the First World War. †Peace, Land, and Bread† were promised, but the people of Russia and the occupied nations under Soviet control would soon learn otherwise. Military reverses and losses were mounting, and Vladimir Lenin, the coward that he was, made promises that him and his communist state had no intention of following through with. After the treaty was signed, the oppression had to begin immediately to shout down the majority of the populations present complaints. The war began soon between the â€Å"Reds† and the â€Å"Whites†, and the masses suffering at the time of the civil war was only a sample of the taste of what the Soviet people were going to go through in the future. Once Stalin took over, he would over shadow both Hitler and Mussolini in their respective cruelness combined. â€Å"Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power. † This is a direct quote from Benito Mussolini, and Fascism more or less lived up to it. The glorious destiny and manifestation of the nation and its peoples were more important than the individual, something that was the extreme opposite of the supposed rights for all individuals of Communism, which purpose was to ensure rights for the factory workers over the factory owners, the poor masses over the rich elite, something that was precarious considering the Soviets were as a majority peasants, who, when coming to power under Lenin or Stalin, now had to watch themselves as any move deemed too right or wrong could get you killed in this backwards, barbaric communist state. As factory workers in a nation such as Fascist Italy, you might be working for less Lira and strikes were out of the question unless you didn’t value your own life, but it was necessary for the resurrection and rebirth of the Roman Empire, which Mussolini tried in earnest to turn Italy from a 2nd rate European Power to a World Power, which he in my opinion succeeded. While the Soviets, especially under Stalin, were also into updating their countries industrialization and economy, at the cost of literally millions of human lives. I’m not trying to say that Italy’s Fascism was a saint, as many thousands were locked away and or perished under Mussolini’s Regime, but literally tens of millions would die for this greater â€Å"communist† cause. While Mussolini was promoting successfully an increased birth rate, the Communist cause was killing people as fast as the bubonic plague. Let me put it this way, Communism protects the individual at the all costs, while Fascism protects the States interests, to the cost and sacrifice of the individual and his rights. And lastly, if Fascism had anything in common with Communism, Mussolini wouldn’t have sent a expeditionary force in with the axis after Operation Barabossa opened up. What was a force of 50,000 was expanded into the 200,000 strong 8th Italian Army, fighting with bravery, valor and even leading the last documented (and successful) cavalry charge against the Soviets on the eastern front. Both nations had intervened for their opposing sides during the Spanish Civil War, the Soviets for the republicans, Fascist clearly for â€Å"Il Caudillo† General Franco and his Nationalists. While both were revolutionist governments with a need for oppression, I admire the Nationalistic aspects of all Fascist regimes in Europe. Not saying that I agree with or condone genocide on any scale commited by Fascism like the Ustasha Regime of Croatia, The Iron Guard of Romania, or the Anti- Jewish laws enforced by Germany or Italy, But they fought with selflessness and sacrificed their lives for their nation, something Americans used to do and believe in, when this liberal change took over I don’t know. But you can bet your life that if this country suffered invasion from China, I’d defend with my life this coast as the Germans had Normandy. Or if we were invaded by Mexico, I’d defend our deserts as the Italian Parachute Division Folgore defended their African positions, to the last man. Bottom line: Communism has more differences than similarities with Fascism. Sources: Brutal Friendship: Mussolini, Hitler, and the fall of Italian Fascism, F. W. Dennis v. United States, 341 U.S. 494 (1951) :: essays research papers

Facts: The petitioners, the leaders of the Communist Political Association (CPA), reorganized the Association into the Communist Party through changing its policies of peaceful cooperation with the United States and its economic and political structure to into the Marxist-Leninist doctrine of the Communist Party. The Communist Party set itself apart from other political parties by disregarding the normal process of change set forth by the constitution. From the literature, statements, and activities of the petitioners, the Communist Party leaders, it is clear that their goal was to achieve a successful overthrow of the government of the United States through the use of force and violence. Procedural History: Petitioners, leaders of the Communist Party, were convicted of violation of sec. 2 and 3 of the Smith Act due to the fact that the pretrial motion to stop the indictment on the grounds that the statute was unconstitutional was denied. The Court of Appeals upheld the conviction, and the defendants once again appeal the verdict. A writ of limited certiorari was granted by the Supreme Court. Issues: 1.)Are sec. 2 and 3 of the Smith Act violates the First Amendment and other provisions of the Bill of Rights? 2.)Are the rights to advocate the overthrow of the government protected by the First and Fifth Amendments? Holdings: The convictions are affirmed because the court ruled that the Smith Act was constitutional and that the governments’ right to self-preservation at times overrules the rights granted by the Bill of Rights. Analysis of Majority Opinion: Shenck vs. United States 249 U.S. 47 (1919) created the precedent allowing for the right of freedom of speech to be violated when there is a â€Å"clear and present danger† to the government. The petitioners clearly intended to overthrow the government because they advocated this action. This is important because it passes one of the major tests of justice in America, intent. It is understandable for the government to put forth its best efforts to protect itself from rebellion making the Smith Act entirely reasonable. Analysis of Concurring Opinion- Frankfurter: The individual is not the only one who as the right to self-preservation, the government shares this right as well as it is shown through the Smith Act. Whereas the individual has a right to self-preservation, the government as well shares this right, and it is manifested in the Smith Act. Also, the Constitution does not entirely guarantee the freedom of speech which was set forth in the early years of the Constitution to prove this.

Creating An Action Plan

Time management has been the largest challenge to date. Work, life, school balance, while determining what time of day is best to set aside to study, how much time is required to be a successful student and still be able to attend the kids sporting events will have me doing homework in the bleachers often. Fortunately, was able to start planning for the challenges of returning to school the day that I decided to pursue a Bachelors of Art in Accounting. Showing the kids that you are never too old to go back to school.Dreams can mom true if you are willing to work hard and making sacrifices that support your overall goals are worth the effort. My desire to graduate with the highest grade point average that I can achieve, will power me to do my very best each day. Proving to myself that I can do this and learning how to quiet the inner voice, when something gets challenging, has been rewarding and empowering to date. I am very glad that chose to attend AIL'. The built in support system, which has been put in place has eliminated any apprehension that would not be able to succeed. The Technical support department being available 24 hours a day to help with computer and connection issues is tremendous. Learning that can rely on my student advisor, Rebecca Anderson, if I have any questions, she has been there to support and assist me through the enrollment process. Shared her experiences as a student and provided examples of other student successes to prove it can be done with commitment. She has also provided insight on the available resources and offered suggestions on how to maximize them.Learning how to navigate and AP into the resources available in the Library and knowing if I have a question, there is a librarian available to point me in the right direction, is refreshing, but also has taken away my fear of not being able to do the necessary research. My fiance has been amazing with the added responsibilities he is willing to take on to ensure can focus on scho ol. He has attended online courses in the past, so he has been a tremendous source of information and support. But he is also there to point out when I am getting side tracked or offer instructive criticism when needed. The kids and I have a challenge in place, the person who has the highest grade point average at the end of their school year in June, gets their favorite meal made for dinner and a week of no chores. So obviously there has been much attention given to grades and homework. Having spent 1 5 years in the military, we are taught to continually assess the plans and goals we have set for ourselves. To look for your strengths and weaknesses and to adjust the process, as needed to accomplish the plan.As I come re-familiar myself with the learning process and requirements, will be able to refine my note taking, establish a routine to take advantage of the time have available to study and improve on the way that I process and retain information. As I learn new techniques and in formation is presented in new ways, it will enhance and change the way that learn. As I become more familiar with intelligent, I will adapt the way I process and retain the information. I believe my academic action plan will always be evolving and improving. My primary goal is to complete school within the time frame currently established and end with a 3. 5 grade point average. I have always tried to ensure that when set goals for myself they are realistic, attainable, specific to the task and motivational. I know that I can accomplish anything that set my mind too, given time and opportunity and finally have both. The financial commitment and sacrifices will be rewarded, when complete school. I will be able to pursue the jobs I want and provide better opportunities for my family.
